Whale Watching

in Kaikoura

Kaikoura, on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is known as the whale-watching capital of the world – and it’s no wonder, as majestic 20 metre-long sperm whales can be spotted off the coast of this picturesque seaside town all year round.

Kaikoura means ‘meal of crayfish’ in Maori and archaeological evidence shows that hunters settled here 900 years ago, attracted to the area by the same rich source of food that attracts the numerous large marine animals on their regular migratory journeys.

Which whales can I see in Kaikoura, New Zealand?

Two currents converge above the 2km-deep Kaikoura canyon making these waters ideal for a number of whales, including southern right, humpback and even the mighty blue whale. Large pods of dusky dolphins are a common sight and the endangered Hector’s dolphins can also sometimes be seen.

Orcas, or killer whales, are regular visitors, as are fur seals and a number of beautiful seabirds, including albatross, petrels and shearwaters. But it’s the almost-guaranteed sighting of sperm whales, which can weigh up to 50 tonnes, that puts whale-watching tours from Kaikoura number one on the must-do activity list for many visitors to New Zealand.

Just two and a half hours north of Christchurch on State Highway 1, Kaikoura has always been a convenient stopping point for anyone on a driving tour of New Zealand, but it’s also a very worthy destination in its own right. Here the Southern Alps crash into the sea in spectacular fashion, creating a breath-taking backdrop to the stunning Kaikoura peninsula and providing scenic cycling, hiking and horse-riding excursions.

Kaikoura still retains its traditional Maori charm and culture. What’s more, the local community has taken measures to minimise the impact it has on the area and is committed to sustainability.

Where to stay in Kaikoura

The Hapuku Lodge and Tree Houses is located just 12km from Kaikoura town and is a great place to stay if you’re visiting the area. The lodge and luxury tree houses are built in a deer park nestled between olive groves, making this beautiful accommodation one of the most romantic places to stay in New Zealand.

The position of the lodge makes it a gateway to both Kaikoura and the mountains. Delicious, local crayfish will always be found on the menu and on a clear evening the star-filled sky is a sight to behold. From Hapuku, the staff will be able to help you plan other activities, such as fishing trips, scuba diving or kayaking.

We had an excellent experience and would definitely recommend you to our friends. Thank you for a great trip - Maeve Garvey
